When the wind blows strongly, production can exceed what national grids are able to handle. When it does not, imbalances arise elsewhere in the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Building more wind turbines alone does not solve this challenge.<\/br>\nEstablishing additional HVDC connections directly to shore is also not sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Without a new way to collect, control, and distribute energy, the power system reaches a technical and operational limit.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When energy infrastructure becomes the limiting factor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A lack of coherence in the energy infrastructure leads in practice to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Renewable energy being curtailed or disconnected<\/li>\n<li>Large variations in electricity prices between regions<\/li>\n<li>Transmission and grid capacity becoming bottlenecks<\/li>\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Security of supply being challenged during periods of imbalance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">This is not a problem with offshore wind technology itself.<br \/>\nIt is a system-level challenge that must be addressed at the infrastructure level.<\/p>\n<p>This is where energy islands differ fundamentally from traditional point-to-point solutions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Energy islands as a system buffer in the European energy system<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">An energy island is first and foremost not a generation facility.<br \/>\nIt is a central system component within the energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Energy islands act as a buffer between offshore wind production and onshore power grids, enabling the system to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aggregate production from multiple offshore wind farms<\/li>\n<li>Control energy flows before they reach national power systems<\/li>\n<li>Distribute electricity flexibly between multiple countries<\/li>\n<li>Relieve existing transmission infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Increase robustness and stability across the overall energy system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of sending all power directly into a single market at a time, the energy island can route electricity intelligently \u2014 based on demand, available capacity, and market conditions.<\/p>\n<p>This makes it possible to integrate large volumes of offshore wind without compromising operational stability.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why more cables are not enough<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">It may seem intuitive to assume that the solution is simply more interconnectors between countries.<br \/>\nHowever, traditional HVDC links address only part of the challenge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They move energy between two markets<\/li>\n<li>They do not manage the overall system complexity<\/li>\n<li>They scale poorly when many offshore wind farms must be integrated simultaneously<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Energy islands change the logic.<br \/>\nThey consolidate complexity offshore and reduce the burden on national grids, instead of transferring it directly onshore.<\/p>\n<p>It is the difference between expanding a road network \u2014 and creating a traffic hub.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bornholm Energy Island as a concrete example<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Bornholm Energy Island is the first full-scale implementation of this approach in Europe.<br \/>\nHere, large volumes of offshore wind power in the Baltic Sea are collected and connected to both Denmark and Germany through a single, integrated energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>This contributes to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved utilisation of wind resources<\/li>\n<li>Increased flexibility in energy trading<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced security of supply<\/li>\n<li>A robust foundation for future connections and expansions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bornholm therefore serves as a reference project for how energy islands can support a more interconnected and efficient European energy system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Energy islands are a prerequisite for the future energy system<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Europe is facing extensive electrification across society.
